If it is your first time being away from home, your family and your friends, you might feel a little bit worried about leaving your hometown. Don’t worry, we all went through this and let me tell you that making the choice to study abroad will give you the opportunity to meet new people, new cultures and gain a feeling that the world is your home!
Seems quite exciting already don’t you think? But you may still wonder how you will overcome homesickness if it is your first time flying far away. Here are some tips that may help you:
1. Sign up for clubs
Les Roches offers many different types of clubs; from culinary, to art following up with sports. By joining one of the clubs that you may feel interested in, you will be able to put your mind in something else and discover a new hobby.
2. Meet people from the same nationality
There are many nationalities around the campus so why not ask if there are any of your nationality? Gathering some people from the same nationality will make you feel less lonely and happy to share the same experience with your compatriots. Don’t feel shy and invite some of your classmates, you will be surprised how much you can share with other nationalities and what you can learn as well from them.
3. Sign up for new discoveries
Bern, Zermatt (the land of Toblerone), Milan and many more! Whether it is just a hiking afternoon around Crans-Montana or a road trip in Europe, you will never feel bored at Les Roches. Instead, you will be able to make and share new memories with your friends.
4. It’s not only about fun
Fun has always an end… Unless you make a fusion of fun and study. Practical duties may sound challenging if it is your first time putting a foot in the hospitality industry, but trust me, they will be the most memorable experiences you will have at Les Roches. There are many other events taking place on campus where you will be able to work in different areas as well as cooperating with various students.
5. Explore by yourself
Be curious! Let your inner Indiana Jones come out! There are many local festivities around the area about culture, culinary or parties. Don’t feel obliged to go with friends, rather try to go alone and start to learn about the new you and prove to your parents you have a sense of adventure.
Now that you have some tips which may be handy once you come, make your own tips and share it with others! We are many students coming around the world, we may be different but at the end of the day you will realize that we are just one big family living our own way of life!
