I believe in a world with freedom. While we live in a world where democracy is advocated, certain countries and people still persecute others and rob them of this very basic aspect of freedom.
Looking at a human’s journey through life, most things are predetermined before we can even speak. Laws and morals are already existent and we are brought up to adapt to norms dictated by the society in which we live. Often times, we find ourselves “following Nemo” and usually not even knowing where we are heading or why we are headed there. So, where is the freedom?
It is my belief that the notion of absolute freedom or absolute democracy is non-existent. We leave in a world where we simply have to abide to the majorities claims, wants and needs. That is not to say that it is the best choice for us, so again, where is the freedom?
Life is the greatest gift mankind could ever receive. This is not only spoken from a religious point of view but also from a biological one. Our bodies are programmed to take breath in, in order for us to stay alive, we have an instinct to eat, and an instinct to run whenever danger comes around. We have no say when it comes to controlling these instincts so in some manner, even our bodies rob us from our freedom.
Now, wouldn’t you want to have the absolute freedom for one day, one time in your life? I know I would and most of all, I would want that day to be on my dying bed.
You could say that with the gift of life comes the misery of dying. Some of us pass away by mere happenstance, such as accidents, while some of us pass away through terminal diseases that eat us alive, literally, with no hope of recovery.
Knowing that nothing awaited you ahead apart from death and the road there was endless suffering, wouldn’t you want for a physician to end your suffering? Some people will argue that we live in a modern age and there are several ways to ease suffering taht don’t result in such drastic measures as doctor assisted suicide. But I ask, what good would they be, unless they provide the cure? The prolonged life of suffering and time gained would not be to my benefit. It would be for my beloved ones who want to have more time with me at the expense of my own suffering. It would be because of the norms and laws that say that no one should take a life even at the expense of my suffering. Where is my freedom?
Please grant me this one last wish, allow people with terminal illness to receive euthanasia. My choice, my last act of absolute freedom!
