Gin Fizz is a refreshing summer drink. It goes all the way back to the early 19th century and became very popular in America from 1900 to 1940. Gin Fizz contains gin, lemon juice, sugar and soda water. In other words, it is a sour-based cocktail from the fizz family. The great thing about soda water is that it creates fizzy bubbles and at the same time it releases all the unique aromatic characteristics of the gin.
There are many variations of the Gin Fizz, for example: If it is shaken with egg white, it is called a Silver fizz and if shaken with an egg yolk it’s called a Golden Fizz. If we use a whole egg it changes to a Royal Fizz. When soda water is replaced with champagne or sparkling wine then it becomes a Diamond Fizz. When Green Crème de Menthe is added to a Gin Fizz it becomes a Green Fizz.
Ramos Gin Fizz also known as Ramos Fizz or New Orleans Fizz is made by adding cream and orange blossom water to a sliver Fizz.
At LRM we teach our students how to make the Silver fizz version. It’s exciting to make and at times nerve racking for some students when they have to separate the egg white from the yolk during their exams. The egg white helps to create a natural decoration of foam on the top of the glass and also gives a good texture to the whole drink.
At LRM we make the Silver Gin Fizz as follows:
What you will need:
Glass: Long glass
Bar Equipment: Shaker
Ingredients/Mise-enplace: Gin, sugar syrup, lemon juice, egg white and soda water.
Garnish: Lemon slice, cherry
Preparation: Start by pouring 6cl of gin, then add 4cl of sugar syrup followed with 4cl of lemon juice and egg white of one whole egg. Shake well and pour it in a long glass. Top it up with soda water. A slice of lemon or lime with cherry is added as a garnish and to finish it off, soda water is poured slowly so that the foam rises above the rim of the glass.
If you like gin, you will love this cocktail!
