Les Roches Gives Back, our student-run charity association founded in January 2016, has been hard at work creating innovative initiatives to raise money for those in need. If you haven’t yet heard of this caring association, read on to learn about their projects and how you can contribute.
Over the past semester, Les Roches Gives Back has organized several fundraising events with a 60:40 strategy: 60% of the proceeds are used to help underprivileged students attend hospitality school in their own country, while 40% of the money raised is set aside for emergency relief.
The fundraising events have been a wonderful opportunity for Les Roches students to put their skills to work, have fun and support a worthy cause. In February 2016, students rolled up their sleeves in the Commissary kitchen for several days, preparing delicious meat and vegetarian dumplings just in time for Chinese New Year. The fresh and frozen dumplings were sold over the Chinese New Year weekend and the following Monday, and the sales brought in more than CHF 590.
Just a few days before the semester’s big charity event, Après-Ski, a Mufti day was arranged to get the word out.
During the day, organizers also held a popcorn sale. Students could take their pick from sweet and savory flavors, and more than CHF 800 were collected through these sales.
On March 4th 2016, Les Roches Gives Back hosted the much-anticipated Après-Ski Charity Event. Students were able to buy tickets to attend a fun evening of good ambiance, food and even a silent jewelry auction at the Chetzeron Hotel on the slopes above Crans-Montana. To finish off the evening, skiers were escorted on an unforgettable torchlight descent, while non-skiers got to enjoy the views while riding on a snowmobile. An After party in Crans was held for those not ready to go home yet — in total, more than CHF 1,800 was raised.
Finally, the Les Roches community pulled together when help was most needed and did a great job raising funds for victims of the earthquake in Ecuador this past April. Between the 40% of funds dedicated to emergency aid raised by Les Roches Gives Back over the semester, proceeds from a charity bake sale and generous donations, a total of CHF 2,330 was collected. Les Roches school management kindly increased this amount to CHF 2,500, all of which was donated to support UNICEF’s aid work in Ecuador. Meanwhile, several bags of clothes were collected and taken to the Ecuadorian embassy in Bern to be sent on to those in need.
A big thank you goes out to all those who have supported Les Roches Gives Back this semester. Make sure to look out for more great ways to get involved!
