PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

Program objective

 

This diploma in hospitality management prepares students for the Bachelor Degree. It combines sound theory and craft based learning (practical classes) with professional internships in the industry. It aims at providing students with the appropriate operational skills for rooms division, reception, and food and beverage management along with developing a professional attitude for the hospitality industry. After completion of the SHA Hotel Management Diploma, students generally continue their studies and complete the bachelor degree; however, they have the possibility to start their professional career at this stage.

SEMESTER OVERVIEW

Semester 1: Hotel Operations I (HOI)
Your first semester of study will prepare you to successfully fulfill functions of various "Front-of-the-House" departments in international restaurants or hotels including:

 

  • Hospitality field and professionalism
  • Service concepts and craft based learning
  • Bar and beverage operations
  • Rooms Division operations
  • English and Foreign language development
  • IT and computer proficiency


Semester 2: Internship (4-6 months)
For this first internship, you will put into practice the basics you will have learned and get a feel for the industry. This first work experience is at operational level either in service (restaurant, bars, room service) or in Rooms Division (Front office, housekeeping).

Semester 3: Hotel Operations II (HOII)
This semester of study builds on the skills that you have already developed by preparing you to fulfill duties of various "Back-of-the-House" departments, such as:

 

  • Culinary Arts, Kitchen
  • Financial accounting and control
  • Rooms Division administration 
  • Communication skills for English and foreign languages
  • Management theory

Semester 4: Internship (4-6 months)
During your second internship, you will work in a professional kitchen environment that will develop your understanding of Culinary Arts as well as various skills such as working under pressure, managing your time and communicating.

Semester 5: Hotel Operations III
This final Hotel Operations semester will prepare you to fulfill the managerial functions of the principal departments of a hotel or restaurant:

 

  • Rooms Division Management
  • Food and Beverage Management
  • Facilities Management
  • Fianancial Management
  • Human Resources and Marketing
  • Continued Language development and Electives

Semester 6: Internship
This last internship in Administration & Management gives the opportunity to use decision making skills,  to practice strategies for project or department development and often opens the door to a permanent position. This internship can also be deferred to the end of studies for students continuing on to the Bachelor Degree.

Students who successfully complete this program, can either start their career at this point or continue towards the bachelor Degree.

Associate Degree in Hotel Management Program
To graduate with an associate degree, students must complete Hotel Operations I and II (HO I and HO II ) as well as gain 6 credits from Hotel Operations III (HO III) either in Rooms Division Management or in Food and Beverage Management. They also have to pass a general education subject. The total number of credits for this option is 62.5.

Higher Diploma In Hotel Management
Upon successful completion of semester 5, students can receive this award only if they decide to step off at this point and start working. The total number of credits for this option is 80.

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

  1. Normally 18 years old and above. Students can be under that age provided they are 18 years old by the time they start their first internship.
  2. A completed application form with all pertinent attachments and an application fee of CHF. 100.-.
  3. A completed study plan form, dated and signed.
  4. An official copy of your High School Diploma or equivalent. Students must have completed at least six years of secondary education and provide evidence of it. Complete information on the school, including school transcript and/or certificate of public examination (including an explanatory note of the grading system) should be provided.
  5. If English is not your mother tongue or if you have not studied in an English speaking school for at least three years, please enclose one of the following:
    5.1. TOEFL: minimum score of 500 points for the paper based test, 173 points for the computer based test and 61 on the internet-based test. The TOEFL testing code number for Les Roches is 9827.
    5.2. Cambridge First Certificate: grade C.
    5.3. IELTS minimum overall band of 5.0 in all components.
    5.4. All English certificates must have been issued in the last 12 months prior to admission.
    5.5. If you do not meet the above English language requirements, you have the possibility of registering on our Intensive English language program to acquire the entry English level.
