Hello everyone! Today I want to talk about a charity initiative I took part in during this semester. This will be my last semester at Les Roches Marbella since I am graduating soon! ☺
Within the school’s Sustainability Club we promote different charities and healthy initiatives, among other activities like walking dogs for the AAA Marbella animal shelter, neighborhood clean-ups, playing volleyball and basketball with impoverished children, teaching English to children that are facing family conflicts, and also yoga classes.
I took part in almost all of the different activities this semester, but the one that meant the most to me over the last last few months is teaching English to children. The association we are working with is called “Despertar sin violencia “(wake up without violence). It is a non-profit organization that started in Marbella in November 2008 and was born from the need to eradicate domestic violence, seeing that government agencies do not quite cover all needs because unfortunately it is a situation that increases daily.
My activity consists giving English and painting classes once per week for two hours to the children of families being cared for by Despertar Sin Violencia. There are two groups of children divided by age: the first is from 6 to 9 years old and the other one goes from 10 to 12 years old.
I find this experience amazing because funny enough, although I am teaching them, they are also teaching me by helping me to improve my Spanish. Then it is also very nice to see how they smile and enjoy their time during classes. As Khalil Gibran wrote in the Prophet “You give but little when you give of your possessions, it is when you give of yourself that you truly give”. The experience of sharing your time and skills with others is really amazing, what I receive back is always much more than what I am giving.
I truly believe that if each one of us can make a small drop, then such a small good action can have a great impact in other people’s lives.
