Name: Eddie Liang
Graduation year: 1993
Nationality: Taiwan
Program name: Hotel Management Diploma
Current position: Vice Chairman of Promisedland Resort & Lagoon, Hualien Taiwan
When Eddie Liang graduated from Les Roches in 1993, he went directly to Hawaii to gain experience. But he had pursued his Hotel Management Diploma for a very specific reason. Within a few years he returned back home to Taiwan, equipped to help his father implement a long-held dream.
Eddie’s father had educated his three sons to fill key roles in the new family business, and Eddie was the lucky one to be sent to Switzerland. The dream was the development of a vacation paradise set in the beautiful natural landscape of rural Hualien, Taiwan.
Surprising and delighting guests
When Eddie returned home with his degree, top designer WAT&G was engaged and soon construction of the 262-room property began. Promisedland Resort and Lagoon is a totally original property, with a Spanish-architectural style reflecting Gaudi’s work and cottages arranged along a man-made and beautifully landscaped lagoon.
With the knowledge gained through his Les Roches education, and invaluable international experience, Eddie helped fulfil his father’s dream of a place that would surprise people, fill them with joy, and touch them in special ways.
From classmates to family
With the resort not opening until 2002, Eddie spent several years in the pre-opening phases. Upon opening he circulated through all the operation teams, learning the business. Notably, he also reconnected with a former classmate from Les Roches, Gladys Chan. Within a few years, Eddie and Gladys were married, and soon Gladys had also joined the family business.
“I highly appreciate Les Roches for giving me the knowledge about international hospitality and the resources to excel”, Eddie said.
“Over the years, we have served many guests from all over the world, making it possible for these VIPs to experience the most enthusiastic service in Taiwan.”
Heading back to campus
In winter of 2019, Eddie and Gladys returned to Switzerland and visited Les Roches. The trip brought back many happy memories, after such a long time. “It was very exciting to be back in Switzerland again after 26 years”, he said. “I was so happy to see both Mr. Nicolas Beyer and Mr. Friedrich Stegmueller, Mr. Beyer joked that in two decades of teaching, we must be the only ones that survived!”
Eddie now serves as Vice Chairman of Promisedland Resort and Lagoon, while Gladys is Director of Overseas Development.
